In post on THE PATHWAY OF HAPPINESS, I insinuated that there is that which leads to unfading happiness and joy in life, and I called it “contentment”. Permit me here to reiterate a few things. Contentment is not a philosophical matter. It is not to say, “I have enough, so what else do I need?” It is a consciousness on the inside of you that your life is in God’s hands. As a result, you believe that everyday God is planning for you, scheming for you, orchestrating life to your favour. So, you are never under crushing pressure; though you may have a lot of burden on you, but there is this “knowing” inside of you that God sees, God knows and God will provide. This is the real meaning of being contented. It does not mean that you will not work, set goals, exercise yourself, etc, but that in all your labours, you do not forget that God is Judge- He lifts up one and brings down another.
Permit me to belabour that matter a little. Do you know that promotion comes from God? Today, as I sat down in my church at Deeper Life, and I was just looking at Pastor W. F. Kumuyi, I imagined the number of people who are under his ministry (Deeper Life Bible Church), then I began to ask myself, “what did this man do to get this amount of people to sit under him in just about 44 years of ministry?” If you have ever been involved in grassroots church building (i.e to build an entirely new ministry/church from the scratch), you will know that you can preach, fast, pray and decree for 20 years and your entire church will be just about 100 people (off and on). What did these men do to build these denominations to their capacities in their lifetime?!
Many times I read books on how to be successful in life (and trust me I read a lot of them), and they are not saying something new. What they are saying, our forefathers did it and were not successful in life. In fact, you may try to do it and after many years you will get frustrated. I may be rather overreaching to say this, but it seems to me as I daily observe life that success has no principles. That you were educated, disciplined, skillful, talented, connected, have a powerful positive attitude does not guarantee you a place in life’s success records. Now, the most laughable is when I see books that want to teach us how to be “millionaires” at 30. So, there is now a principle for becoming a millionaire. Lol.
Jesus said in Mark 4 vs. 26-27, “the kingdom of God is as if a man should cast seed into the ground; and should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.” Take note: “he knoweth not how”. It is possible for a man to make a business deal and win big, but he knows not how. All he knows is that he planted and his crop yielded. Since he is successful, we will now invite him to teach us how to sow and reap successfully. He will come and say all the nonsense he knows, and tell you how he slept little, refused to talk to friends, etc. lol. How does sleeping little connect to a bountiful harvest? The Bible says, “he knows not how.” Mark Zuckerberg made millions at a young age through Facebook. But permit me to say, “he knows not how”. Bill Gates dropped out of school to pioneer software development, and today he is the world’s richest man, but he knows not how. Dangote started with some generous donations from an uncle to sell and market cement, but today, he is Africa’s richest man. Permit me to say, “he knows not how”. You can attend Lagos Business School and sit under Dangote, Otedola, Utomi, etc for 5 years, there is no guarantee that you will be anywhere near the richest man in your Local Government Area (even if you obeyed all their rules).
Behind every man who succeeded, there was a silent conspiracy that brought that man into his placement in life. There was a ‘chance’ event, an opportunity, an orchestration of life that brought him into relevance. Bill Gates entered the scene at just the right time when Software development was about to take over the world. Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook came at the right time when the breakthrough in GSM technology was revolutionizing the world. He’s not rich because of Facebook, but because of Nokia, Samsung, Tecno, etc. Dangote had just the right amount of money and connections to purchase the ailing cement factory which he turned around to bring about his breakthrough in life. I encourage you to get the book “OUTLIERS” by Malcolm Gladwell and read. He was one man that properly analyzed the world’s successful men and the realities behind their wealth. Life is not all about planning, hard work, looking for the best-paying job, traveling abroad, getting an education, etc. The secret to success in life is deeper than what is seen on the outside. Solomon said it well when he said, “I saw something else under the sun. The race isn’t won by fast runners, or the battle by heroes. Wise people don’t necessarily have food. Intelligent people don’t necessarily have riches, and skilled people don’t necessarily receive special treatment. But time and unpredictable events overtake all of them.” Eccl. 9 vs. 11(GW).
So, if we are going to really be successful in life, there are few things that will be clearly known to us.
One, we may have to redefine success.
Two, we must locate a sure path for success.
These two matters must we watch out for in the subsequent posts.
