Since the president of France visited the shrine of the late Fela Kuti, encomiums has continued to rain upon the late singer. People have hailed him for being many things including prophet, god, etc. In fact, one joker of a man (who I am surprised that he’s being taken serious by some right thinking people) said people should throw away their pastor’s messages and buy Fela’s songs.
What I want to do through this write-up is simple. I want to establish some clear principles for Christian youths as they seek to find relevance in the world in which we live in. As a secondary school teacher, with a responsibility towards lots of young people, I have come close to understanding the passion of a genuine Christian father for his sons and daughters. Thus, I have always taken the pains to talk to my young people concerning the people who are their ‘stars’ and ‘celebrities’. Many of our celebrities are not positive role models. That is very clear enough. Every Dick and Harry knows that. No Christian father will desire to have his children turn out in lifestyle like these musicians and film stars.
Now, this is the joke. While we are busy trying to talk our young people out of desiring to be like this ‘big shots’ and laboring to make them not to see them as role models, the world is celebrating them! That makes us seem like ‘kill-joys’, ‘frustrated people’ and all what not. I once remember one time when I was discussing with my kids, and I mentioned a particular musician as an example of what they should not be. This young man (the musician) openly admitted that his mother could be on T.V. and hear that he now has a son from one woman like that. The young man has had about 3 children or more from different women. His life is a sorry one, and never an example for any youth who really want to live for God. After I finished sharing all that with them, the same young man won a very important musical award (popularly known as MOBO awards), and many people (including the president of Nigeria) came out to congratulate him! Lol. I had to have a good laugh at myself, and I asked myself. “after seeing all that this young man has accomplished, and the accolades being poured on him, by even presidents, why will your children believe you that he is not worthy of emulation?” As I thought about it, I came to a conclusion. A conclusion that currently decides my life’s choices, and I believe is important for every one really desirous to live for Jesus in this world.
The conclusion is this. It is funny but I will say it first and explain later……
OUR WORLD HAS GONE MAD!
Every passing day, the world system shows in its character that it has Satan at the helm of affairs. The things celebrated, condoned, honored and appreciated by the world, are things that can never come near God’s kingdom, nor have His approval in a thousand years. Homosexuality is now being accepted in our world as a normal thing. Even sexual immorality is no big deal. It’s now normal life. That is why BBNaija’s fans and organizers cannot understand the problem with some people speaking against the show. After all, sexual immorality is what everybody is doing, even all those religious scarecrows. The only difference is that these religious people do their own in secret, which makes them hypocrites. It is now fashionable for a lady to have a child outside wedlock, and that is the way to go for most of our celebrities today. It is called ‘baby mama’. Hence, when you get to social media to read news, you will be seeing Wizkid’s baby mama,2 Face’s baby mama, Davido’s baby mama, etc. No big deal, ‘man no be firewood’.
So, permit me here to warn, the only thing that will make you not to get involved in this madness will be when you come to appreciate the fact that the approval of God is what matters most in a man’s life. One day we will all die (like Michael Jackson died, like Fela died), and it will not matter at that time what people say about you, because you will not be there to hear it. It will only matter what God says about your life, as you stand before His judgement throne. Our generation seem to be forgetting that, and are now craving for acceptance and recognition from this world.
I was also like that until God confronted me. When Nelson Mandela was being buried, as I observed the retinue of presidents that graced his burial, I felt a rising desire in my heart to live in such a manner that when I die, presidents of nations will come for my burial. As I cuddled that thought in my heart, the Holy Spirit began to rebuke me. “At what cost? Have you considered that? What will it cost you to have all these people attend your burial?” Did it ever cross your mind that you may need to be quiet over some things you would have spoken up about? Did it ever cross your mind that you may have to advocate for things you do not believe in just to be the world’s favorite? The cost of being popular in the world is enormous, and as the world gets madder, it becomes almost impossible to have their respect, honour and admiration, and yet please God.
So, I had to decide. What do I really want? To be popular with men, win prizes, attend conference, and finally be a thorough disappointment to God? Or will I afford the cost of being evil spoken of and hated by presidents of nations, and by international news media (like CNN, BBC, etc.), because I am standing on my Christian convictions?
So, let me reiterate here, in summary. Fela sang against the government. He was an activist who sent out his messages through his songs, and yes he was really inspired (don’t ask me “by who?”). However, the fact that Macron visited his shrine does not make him a role model for any genuine Christian. His life was nothing to write home about, and he made it clear by the way he lived that he had no regards for God or men.
So, let us be careful as Christians to ensure we are not swayed by the mad world, and the things they esteem. May the approval of God be your utmost pursuit, not the admiration of men (in life or in death).
A word is enough for the wise.
IN HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE
