Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. (Acts 2:36 KJV)
You know, I sometimes sit down and ponder over things in my heart. When I see what men do to their fellow men, and I see the evil that goes on in men’s heart, I sometimes wonder, “what goes on in the mind of evil men that makes them commit various kinds of evil?” In recent times, the western world had been shaken by the death of a black-American (George Floyd) who was killed by a police officer. Sometimes, as I see the picture of his knee on Floyd’s neck, I find myself wondering, “What could be going on in this man’s heart as he placed his knee on a fellow man’s neck for close to 9 minutes?” “What could give him the kind of heart, impetus and tenacity to sustain such wickedness for so long even when the man was saying, ‘I can’t breathe’?” So also, sometimes, I wonder at rapists, terrorists, wife-beaters, prostitutes, homosexuals, etc. What goes on in a man’s heart when he subscribes and submits himself to such wickedness?
The Bible provides an explanation for evil in men’s heart: THE FALLEN NATURE OF MAN. The Bible paints for us the picture of a good thing gone badly. Man was created in God’s image, and was given authority over all created beings on this terrestrial reality. However, by obeying the Devil instead of God, man opened the door for the highest corruption in the world ever; and since then that corruption has continued to reign in man’s heart. Where does rape, racism, murder, adultery, etc. come from? It is not from the environment, but from the very heart of man. This is an incontrovertible truth, and when we neglect it, we will be unable to answer the questions life poses at us as we observe happenings around the world. Now, why does God not stop evil from happening? It is because stopping evil will be tantamount to killing the man, since evil is inherent inside of him; and where would you and I had been if God were like that? What would have become of us if He acted in His full regalia of justice? It is easy for us to see why God should punish the rapists and ‘wicked men’ like the Police man, Derek Chauvin. But do we see how bad that little sin of ours is before God? If we did see it, then we will know that if He were to take the garb of a Judge in His full regalia, there shall none escape. Of course, the scriptures tell us that a day of judgment is coming when God will reward everyman according to what he has done with his body. However until that day, He has permitted that the tares should grow with the wheat.
Secondly, the Bible provides a solution for evil in men’s heart: THE MAN CHRIST JESUS. This is the fundamental power and preserve of the Christian faith. It is easy to describe the malady that is upon a man or a society, but it is another thing to bring a solution to that malady. It is easy to describe the anatomy and motions of cancer, HIV/AIDS and the Corona virus in the body; but it is another issue to provide a cure for those afflicted by them. This is another place where society has missed it. God did not solve the problem of evil simply by taking man out (He has tried it before and proved that it doesn’t solve the problem of evil). He could not solve the problem of evil by laws and punishments. Even when adultery was a crime punishable by death, people still committed adultery. Can you imagine that? The motions of sin are so terrible that no human laws can stop a man under its control. Laws only serve to deter unserious offenders; but when a man is under a compulsion to do wickedness; a thousand laws cannot stop him.
So, Peter told his audience, “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.” The solution to the problem of evil in the society is “that same Jesus.” It is disheartening that in discussing the problem of evil in the society, when you bring up Jesus, you will appear to be a religious fanatic and an idealist. But it is the stone rejected by the builders that is the chief cornerstone. As the throes of atheism and apathy towards God spreads in the western world, there will be a remarkable increase in evil that will even shock the undeveloped world. The problem of evil cannot be solved by education or advocacy. Though these things can help, but it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, preached and believed, that saves a society from the problems of evil.
I wish I can say it in better words, or that I have a larger space to write, but this is an incontestable truth, that the solution to the malady of this world is in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. That is why, in the midst of all advocacies, social services, protests and legal rejigs, let us not forget the Gospel. I labour among the youths, both as a Mathematics teacher and as a life-coach, and I can tell you that the amount of sexual perversions within our young people is quite alarming. With the height of advancement in stupidity and nudity of our songs and music videos, the last is yet to be heard of rape. I was talking to someone recently concerning the issue of rape in the world today, and I told her that each young man I preach to and lead to the Lord and is discipling to follow Christ till the end, is one less vessel in the hands of Satan for rape and all of those other wickedness.
So, in all our anger at rape, racism, terrorism, etc., let us remember the Gospel. We can carry out enlightenment campaigns, sex education, etc., but may we not forget that “that same Jesus, whom the world does not want to talk about, is the one whom God has made the solution to the problem of evil.” If we really believe this, then we will never cease to shout it loud and clear.
